First Birthday!

Hey all.  I know this is a much anticipated update, so I hope we won’t disappoint.  Dexter turned 1 on Friday!!  It really did go fast.  It was only ten months ago that Dan brought home our little fur baby (who has since turned into the mature little boy we love so much!).   Dexter’s presents arrived early, and we weren’t about to make him wait to “open” them.  He got a new bed (after chewing up the last one), bigger food & water bowls, a doggie toothbrush (after using a human toothbrush), and a larger “Dexter the Elephant” toy.  He seems happy with his presents, but as you can see in the second photo, he’s not a fan of plushy cushions.  We removed it after he started chewing it and removing the insides.  It’s strange, but at least he uses the bed now instead of sleeping next to it.

While shibas generally don’t need to bathe much (they’re self-cleaners, and prefer to avoid anything dirty), Dexter was beginning to actually smell like a dog.  We spared him of it on his birthday, but on Saturday we gave him a much needed bath.  Dexter wasn’t the most cooperative, but he did appreciate getting to roll around on the towel to dry off (in addition to shaking all over the living room).

He also enjoyed the visits we had this weekend–Lauren on Saturday, and Anny & Matt on Sunday.  Though he’s currently chewing on his regular Nyla-bone, he’s been getting a lot of use out of his bacon-flavored T-bone Nyla-chew!

Lastly, Dexter wants to wish a very happy Fathers’ Day to his daddy, Dan!

Neuter

On Friday morning we took Dexter to get neutered.  His surgery was more complicated due to him being born a cryptorchid–essentially, this just means that one or both of his testicles failed to drop.  In his case, one eventually decided to make an appearance.

Post Blizzard

A few days after the blizzard and Dexter still loves the snow, probably even more now since he can walk on the snow without falling into it.

First Christmas and First Snow

Dexter received some new toys for the holiday and today he experienced his first real snow fall.  As expected he loved playing in it!

Dexter v. Carrier

I opened the door to Dexter’s carrier and he decided he could still fit in it.

Putting Up The Tree

Today we decided to put up the tree.  Dexter was very interested in what was in the box and sniffed the tree.  Once we set it up with the lights he wouldn’t stop barking at it.

Brooklyn Shiba Meetup

Last Sunday we took Dexter to the Brooklyn Shiba Meetup at Hillside Dog Park.  Dexter met Kenshin.  It was almost impossible to get them both to look at the camera at the same time.

New Harness

We purchased an Ezydog Chest Plate Harness for Dexter.  The harness stays in place as they said it would and it is easy to put on him once we got it adjusted properly for him.  It also came with a seat belt restraint for use in the car.  Dexter pulls the leash less than when we walked him with the collar.

November Staten Island Shiba Meetup

Below are pictures from Dexter’s first shiba meetup.  He had a great time, and seemed very excited to meet new shiba friends.  He even managed to lose four teeth over the course of the meetup!
